A border state in the American Civil War, Maryland saw its sons and daughters divided. Throughout the war, there was an ebb and flow of small and large incursions over the Potomac River.

near Washington County that Robert E. Lee undertook some of the most memorable campaigns of his career. In 1860, in service to the Union President to capture John Brown at Harpers Ferry. In 1862, as a Confederate General to
force the action west of Washington, only to be intercepted on his return by McClellan at Antietam. And finally in 1863, in a last desperate attempt to end the war, reaching the South's high water mark at Gettysburg.
